Supermodel Liu Wen takes a stand for all Asian women: You can't box us all together

Image
A beautiful face has quite an impact, but a careful consideration of how to affect stereotypes can be absolutely breathtaking. Supermodel Liu Wen has built an illustrious career in the cut-throat fashion industry, paving the way for models of Eastern Asian descent. The most notable of her campaigns have included representing Estée Lauder as its first Asian face since she signed on in 2010, as well walking the Victoria's Secret runway multiple shows. The Chinese model spoke with NY Mag on her interpretation of Chinese beauty and the fashion industry's trenchant stereotyping of Asian models. And considering her extensive experience, Wen gracefully offers her observation on the public's understanding of Chinese beauty. "Now, there are more and more Asian models and opportunities to understand Asian beauty," she said to the publication. "For example, before, people would put me in red lips because they thought it looked Chinese. But now, they put a lot of red

Victorinox Announces The INOX Cybertool, A Clip-On Smartwatch

Image
If you need to turn your dumb watch into a smartwatch and don’t mind a parasitic ring of plastic attached to your analog timepiece, then Victorinox and Acer have you covered. The Cybertool offers multiple timezone displays, activity monitoring, and call and message notifications that appear on the ring around the watch. A Help function transmits your current GPS coordinates to a pre-set phone recipient. The Cybertool (which borrows its name from a dot-com era pocket knife ) is designed to work with Victorinox’s INOX watches although there might be some way to retrofit it onto another similarly sized watch (don’t hold your breath.) It will cost about $225 when it goes on sale and the INOX watch costs about $600. It’s a clever addition to the smart-dumb-watch canon although I doubt it will see much interest outside of a few die-hard Victorinoxers. It’s a fun idea, though, and the first time I’ve seen a low cost version of this sort of add on, the first from Linde Werdelin which was cle

'America's Next Top Model' gets second life on VH1 — but Tyra won't return

Image
America's Next Top Model will live to smize again — except Tyra Banks won't be there to see it. The TV show, which began its life on UPN before moving to The CW in 2006, has just been picked up by VH1. The twist: Its next incarnation will feature a brand new host. Yes, smizers: No Tyra. Instead, Banks will merely maintain her role as an executive producer on the show. VH1 said that the series' "re-imagined cast of host and judges" will be announced at a later date. The new season will feature 14 new episodes and does not yet have a premiere date. The move, of course, makes sense, since VH1 was the first network pick up the show in syndication and continues to host ANTM repeats. "After creating an incredible, global brand, I am beyond excited to have the show reborn," Banks said in a statement via VH1."I will continue as Executive Producer, but must turn my attention to new business endeavors, so I want to find a new host. I'm pumped to identify

Girl with cancer fulfills her dream, models during New York Fashion Week show

Image
NEW YORK – The room was dim. Crimson lights illuminated the intricately beaded gowns that fluttered down the runway in golds, blacks and reds. Designer Naeem Khan debuted a stunning Fall/Winter 2016 collection — what he called a "practice in couture." But the real star was 11-year-old Trinity Moran, who traveled from Texas to make an appearance in Khan's show. Moran has rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare, life-threatening cancer involving muscle tissue . She is schedule to have surgery in five weeks and she shared her dream of walking in a fashion show with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Lucky for her, Khan and stylist Mary Alice Stephenson decided to step in as her fairy godparents and make her dreams come true — in a big way. Stephenson, who styled Khan's show, has served as the National Fashion Ambassador for Make-A-Wish for 15 years now. When she presented Khan with the opportunity to facilitate Moran's wish, he couldn't turn her down, and he offered Moran the cha

See the unbelievable evolution of 10 artists on the Grammys' red carpet

Image
If there is one thing musicians know how to do really well, it's (not sing) reinventing their images. In honor of the 58th Grammy Awards on Monday, we took a trip down red carpets of years past to scope out how the most celebrated and famous artists of 2016 have evolved since their first awards show. For some, like Justin Bieber , he evolved from a boy to a fuccboi before our eyes. Other divas, like Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga , went from outrageous to glamorous AF. And then, there is Beyoncé , who we can all agree is a damn chameleon — with or without the ladies of Destiny's Child.
