South Africa’s Ex President Zuma to face trial after dropping appeal against prosecution

Image
South Africa’s embattled ex-president Jacob Zuma has abandoned attempts to halt a looming corruption trial on charges related to a 1990s arms deal, his office said Wednesday. A statement released by his foundation said the Constitutional Court had on Tuesday accepted “his withdrawal of the application for leave to appeal” against prosecution. “This indeed paves the way for him to prepare for the trial and demonstrate that he has never benefited from any arms deal corruption or tried to evade the trial,” it said. “He hopes that his innocence will indeed be demonstrated for all to see.” South Africa’s Zuma is alleged to have taken bribes of four million rand ($220,000) related to a $3.4 billion arms deal with French aerospace and defence giant Thales in 1999 when he was deputy president. The Supreme Court last month dismissed his application for a permanent stay of prosecution against him. He then approached the Constitutional Court in another appeal bid.

GERMAN DOCTORS STRIP NAKED AND POSE IN PROTEST ... We Need More PPE!!!

Image
Doctors in Germany are demanding more personal protective equipment -- to safely fight COVID-19 -- and their plight's getting attention, 'cause they got naked. These Berlin docs are in ... their birthday suits for a campaign called Blanke Bedenken , which translates to blank/naked concerns. They kept it PG-13, you don't see any of their privates as they posed in unique ways to cover up a bit. Their message comes across clearly ... they're in need of more gear -- like face masks, gloves and gowns. It's a plea we've heard from doctors, nurses and EMTs here in the U.S. for more than a month. The German doctors say without the critically-needed PPE, they might as well be bare naked on the frontlines. Even some of the masks they wore in the pics are makeshift, homemade jobs. One of the docs has a sign that reads (in German), "I learned to sew wounds. Why do I now need to know how to sew masks?" Germany's been credited for managin

VP MIKE PENCE Policy, Schmolicy ... I DON'T NEED A MASK, MAYO CLINIC!!!

Image
Vice President Mike Pence thinks the rules don't apply to him -- he's brazenly ignoring Mayo Clinic policy by not wearing a face covering, even though everyone else is. Here's the deal ... the VP toured the renowned Minnesota hospital with a large group Tuesday and decided he'd pass on wearing a mask. The medical facility says, as policy, everyone needs to cover their face to guard against transmission of COVID-19. Everyone around Pence adhered to the policy, so he stood out like a sore thumb. Keep in mind, this is the guy President Trump pegged to run the coronavirus task force. So, it's bad optics, potentially dangerous ... and just rude to his hosts. The Mayo Clinic even tweeted that it told Pence about the policy mandating all patients, visitors and staff wear face coverings or masks BEFORE the tour of the grounds. That tweet has since been deleted. THE GREAT COVER-UPLAUNCH GALLERYGetty While Pence and POTUS have refused to wear masks ... b

Hillary Clinton endorses Joe Biden

Image
Hillary Clinton endorsed Joe Biden during a virtual town hall on Tuesday, putting the support of the Democratic standard bearer from four years ago behind the former vice president and  current presumptive presidential nominee. Clinton touted Biden as a "friend" and a figure who has been "preparing for this moment his entire life," as she lambasted President Donald Trump as someone who is so ill prepared to be commander in chief that he appears to be just playing the role on television She added, in a nod to the coronavirus, that "this is a moment where we need a leader, a president, like Joe Biden." Biden called Clinton a "friend" and thanked her for the "wonderful personal endorsement." The former secretary of state's endorsement was a foregone conclusion -- she had said for months that she would back the eventual nominee -- but it remains a significant boost for Biden because Clinton still enjoys deep suppo

COVID-19: No evidence that people who recovered can’t be re-infected — WHO

Image
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says there is no evidence that people who recovered from COVID-19 cannot be re-infected. In a “Scientific Brief” released from its headquarters in Geneva on Saturday and posted on its website, WHO warned against propagating the idea of COVID-19 ‘immunity passport’. “Some governments have suggested that the detection of antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, could serve as the basis for an ‘immunity passport’. “They have suggested that it could serve as an ‘immunity passport’ or ‘risk-free certificate’ that would enable individuals to travel or return to work, assuming they are protected against re-infection. “There is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection. “The development of immunity to a pathogen through natural infection is a multi-step process that typically takes place over one to two weeks,’’ WHO said. Bing made the best coronavirus tracker. Seriously.

Image
As my quarantine hits day 40, I've settled on a routine for checking on the coronavirus data that floods the internet every day. Instead of looking at multiple sites, I go to Bing. Yes, Bing. It's messy online. One site shows you the rate of new cases, the other recovery and fatality rates. Over there, logarithmic graphs of total cases.  To cut through all the noise, I go to a site I never used before the pandemic broke out. Everyday I refresh the Bing tab that I opened on my laptop around March 18 and haven't closed since. I was working remotely in Peru when the coronavirus was classified as a pandemic. I soon realized I was going to be here longer than I had planned. The Bing COVID-19 Tracker is impressively organized, easy to use, and clear. And it surfaces relevant news articles, thanks to Bing, Microsoft's oft-forgotten runner-up to Google Search.  The layout is what distinguishes it from other trackers. It features a map view, overview graphs,

UN agency calls for $1 trn developing world debt write-off

Image
The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said on Thursday that around one trillion dollars of debt owed by developing countries would be cancelled under a proposed global deal. The UN agency said that the plan was to help them overcome the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The world’s developing economies, which were already struggling with a rapidly growing debt burden, must now confront a record global downturn, plummeting prices for their oil and commodities exports and weakening local currencies. At the same time, they need to spend more money on healthcare and to protect their economies. Some 64 low-income countries currently spend more on debt service than their health systems, according to UNCTAD. “This is a world where defaults by developing nations on their debt is inevitable,” Richard Kozul-Wright, director of UNCTAD’s Division on Globalisation and Development Strategies, said during a video conference with newsmen. In a report calling for
