Ottoh “Joe Boy” Joseph, winner of the best boxer at the fourth edition of the GOtv Night, has received a cheque of N1million, the cash prize for the laurel.
The cheque was presented to him on Friday by Jenkins Alumona, Managing Director/Chief Executive of Flykite Productions, promoters of the GOtv Boxing Night.
Joseph, who knocked out National Lightweight champion, Nurudeen “Prince” Fatai, in the fourth round of their eight round national lightweight challenge at the event on Sunday, is the second winner of the cash prize, the biggest amount ever paid to a boxer in Nigeria.
Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, the light welterweight boxer, was the first winner.
Speaking at the brief ceremony at which the cheque was presented, Ottoh thanked GOtv for the cash prize and the opportunities boxers are being given to fight more frequently.
“I am happy at what GOtv is doing. I have to add that I did not think it was possible for boxing to provide this kind of reward in Nigeria. It is a pleasant surprise and it will motivate me to do better,” he said.
Alumona advised Joseph to spend the money wisely, as such an amount is capable of transforming his life.
“As a young man, there are many temptations and distractions. I will urge to remain focused, spend the money wisely so that it can deliver great value to you and your career. What I just told you is what I would tell my brother. I wish you the best in your future endeavours,” Alumona said.
