Why is Bill Gates's net worth significantly greater than Steve Jobs's net worth?

Considering AAPL eclipsed MSFT in terms of market cap. Jobs' net worth is about 1/10 that of Gates. Obviously he owns less of his own company, but how did that come about? Did Jobs sell his stake earlier?
As stated, Steve sold virtually of his Apple stock in 1985. He then spent some of that money bootstrapping NeXT Computer (which had several other large investors like Ross Perot, Canon and via royalties, IBM) and Pixar, which he purchased from Lucasfilm in 1986. Pixar IPO'd in 1995 and Steve owned well over half of the company. When Disney acquired Pixar Steve became the largest individual shareholder of DIS. Steve returned to AAPL in 1996-97 after AAPL acquired NeXT for $400mm. I believe he sold most of the AAPL stock he received in that transaction, but he has since received a ton of well-deserved stock options for running AAPL.
