Diamonds Born in Santa Clara

Image
A Santa Clara, Ca.-based company called Diamond Foundry is this morning taking the wraps off what it’s been creating over the last three years: the ability to produce diamonds. In Santa Clara. As the company explains it, it discovered a plasma that allows atoms to attach themselves to a thin slice of diamond that’s been extracted the old-fashioned way, by being plucked from the earth. One by one, it says, atoms stack atop the diamond’s crystal structure, growing layer by later into a “pure, cultured jewelry-grade diamond.” We couldn’t catch CEO Martin Roscheisen on the phone yesterday to ask what, precisely, jewelry-grade diamonds mean. We’re guessing if they were colorless and had what gemologists refer to as “excellent clarity,” Diamond Foundry would say so in its marketing materials. (It does not.) Either way, the gems seem to be good enough for a list of prominent list of investors who’ve plugged some of their capital into the company. Diamond Foundry’s backers include entrepreneu

McDonald's employee fired for throwing water on homeless man in video

BY MEGAN SPECIA A McDonald's employee has been fired for throwing water in the face of a homeless man at the drive-through window of one of the chain's Detroit locations, the store's franchisee told Detroit media on Wednesday. Footage of the callous incident was posted online and quickly went viral, igniting outrage and sparking his dismissal, McDonald's franchisee Wise Finley said. The clip, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, was filmed by a customer at the drive through and the McDonald's employee is clearly visible. The worker, who has not been identified, beckons over an elderly homeless man, who he calls Willy, to the restaurant window by holding out a food package. As the man comes to get the sandwich, the McDonald's worker throws a cup of water in his face while the driver in the car laughs. "Why'd you do that?" the homeless man asks, soaking wet. It is unclear when it was taken. Finley said he was "disturbed&qu

Kenya Forces Destroy Camp Used By Suspected Militants Linked To Al Shabaab

Kenyan security forces on Wednesday in Mombasa confirmed the destruction of five camps used by suspected militants linked to the Somali Islamist group al Shabaab in a sweep of a forest on the north coast. James Serian, Commander in charge of the operations, said the army and police launched the operation to flush out militants that were using the area to launch strikes in Kenya. “The combined security units discovered five different al Shabaab hideouts inside the forest. “The hideouts have already been destroyed and the weapons handed to the government,’’ he said. He said Al Shabaab has been behind a spate of attacks on Kenya in the past two years, including an assault on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall that killed 67 people and a raid on Garissa University in the northeast that killed almost 150. Serian said the militants also launched several attacks in 2014 that left more than 100 dead in Lamu County region, an area that includes Boni forest. He said the militants fled when the ope

It's never a surprise when the latest release in the Call of Duty series sells lots and lots of copies, but this year's Black Ops III has set new records. Publisher Activision has revealed that in only the first three days of the game's release, $550 million in sales has been generated worldwide. This makes the FPS the single largest entertainment release of 2015 so far, not only eclipsing the recent release of Halo 5, but even topping this summer's opening weekend of the Jurassic Worldmovie. But how about comparing Black Ops III's early success with past Call of Duty entries? Activision says that this year's digital sales are almost double that of last year's Advanced Warfare, while retail sales also saw a "significant" increase compared to 2013 and 2014's releases (Ghostsand Advanced Warfare, respectively). In fact, this is the most successful Call of Duty since developer Treyarch's own Black Ops II, which became the single biggest entert
