Scientists looking over old data on Uranus discover something new

Image
Uranus is very far from the sun, making it one of the coldest planets in our solar system. Over 30 years ago, Voyager 2 flew by the planet on January 24, 1986. Decades later, scientists were looking over that data again and found another new secret about the planet. What scientists didn’t know 34 years ago was that Voyager 2 had flown through a plasmoid, which is a giant magnetic bubble that scientists believe could have been stripping Uranus of its atmosphere. Scientists say that atmospheric escape is driven by the magnetic field of the planet that can help the atmospheric escape or hinder the process. Magnetic fields are believed to help protect the planet by fending off atmosphere-stripping blasts from the solar wind. However, these magnetic fields can also create opportunities for the atmosphere to escape. Both Jupiter and Saturn suffer from this condition where significant amounts of atmosphere escape when magnetic field lines become tangled. Scientists say that Ur

Oppo Find X2 Neo leaks, looks very similar to the Reno3 Pro 5G

Image
Farlier today we heard that the Oppo Reno3 Youthwill be launched outside China under the name Oppo Find X2 Lite. Now, the same source says the Reno3 Pro 5G will also go global, but this time the name will be Oppo Find X2 Neo. The render of the Oppo Find X2 Neo looks like the Reno3 Pro 5G,  including the wallpaper, so it could be a case of both being fake, or Oppo could really be bringing its Chinese Reno3 lineup as part of the Find X2 family outside its domestic market. Specs-wise, the Reno3 Pro 5G is truly an intriguing phone - 48MP main camera, coupled with a 13MP telephoto shooter, an 8MP ultrawide-angle snapper, and a 2 MP B/W cam for good measure. The battery is 4,025 mAh with VOOC 4.0 30W fast-charging. The Find X2 Neo, if real, will be looking to bridge the gap between the Find X2 Lite/Reno3 Youth and the X2 Pro dup.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and GLS 63 First Drive: The sports car grew up

Image
The sports car had a good run, but its days are numbered. Time and trends are callous in their disregard for nostalgia: drivers are voting with their wallets, and they’re voting for super SUVs like the new 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and GLS 63. With 603 horsepower to play with, can you really blame them? AMG is of course no stranger to SUVs. Roughly 50-percent of its US sales are in the category, something engineers and product planners alike haven’t been slow to capitalize on. The result is a pair of family trucks with physics-defying manners on the road, or as close as Stuttgart can get it. Let me be blunt: vehicles the size, shape, and weight of the GLE and GLS really aren’t obvious candidates for AMG’s breed of hurtling performance. To deliver that, you need a very special drivetrain. Specifically, it’s a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo which uses Mercedes’ EQ Boost system. Assembled according to AMG’s “one man, one engine” principle, it delivers 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torq

Is it time for an even bigger iPad Pro?

Image
The gap between the iPad Pro and the MacBook only gets smaller, and now I suspect it’s time for Apple’s tablet to get bigger. The arrival this week of the new 2020 iPad Pro , complete with LiDAR Scanner camera and fancy new Magic Keyboard cover, saw Apple take a huge step with the addition of mouse and trackpad support, and an on-screen cursor. It’s something that the Cupertino company has long maintained is unnecessary, even as it quietly changed its mind on things like stylus support and external peripherals. Even so, the Apple Pencil and USB-C are one thing: the ability to use a good old-fashioned mouse with your iPad Pro feels like quite another. Apple’s messaging cranked up a gear, too. The newest iPad Pro “is so fast it outpaces most PC laptops available today,” the company crowed. The new “A12Z Bionic is designed to be put to work, especially with pro apps.” Multitasking, split-screen view, and big-name software all add up to one core conclusion: it doesn’t really ma

Nokia 8.3 5G officially revealed as “first truly global 5G smartphone”

Image
The Nokia 8.3 5G was revealed in full today by the company with a set of specifications that appear to far outweigh its price. The Nokia 8.3 5G sports a nearly full-frontal coverage display with a bit of a chin and a punch-hole for its front-facing camera, and a circular camera array at the back. This device will be what Nokia describes as the “first truly global 5G smartphone.” The Nokia 8.3 5G will come with a 6.81 PureDisplay – that’s a full frontal coverage display with a punch hole in the upper left-hand corner, with a bit of a chin near the bottom where the NOKIA logo resides. This device will have a “Nordic Premium design” what Nokia describes as the “best Android implementation.” That’s likely Android with very, very few changes by Nokia past what Google created in the first place. The Nokia 8.3 5G rolls with a circular camera array at its back, with four lenses. There’s an ultra-wide camera with “stunning low light performance”, a main camera (a 64MP “ultra detaile

Sea of Thieves and others go free-to-play on Xbox One this weekend

Image
A lot of us are cooped up inside at the moment, and if you’re an Xbox One owner in search of something to play, you might want to check out the three games that are going free-to-play on the platform over the weekend. Microsoft today announced a Free Play Days promotion that begins today and runs through Sunday, March 9th, giving you the entire weekend to check all of them out. The first free game Microsoft has on offer is Sea of Thieves. This is something of common sight among Microsoft’s various promotions, and those who play this weekend will get the “X-Marks-the-Spot” Eye of Reach. It’s worth noting that Microsoft is also running a separate Sea of Thieves promotion that will net Game Pass Ultimate subscribers a bunch of ship parts themed around Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which will be redeemable this weekend. The second game that’s going free for the weekend is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Microsoft points out that this is the first time Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has b

Google Advanced Protection Program tweaks “outside” app installs

Image
Today the folks at Google responsible for the Google Advanced Protection Program let it be known that their security system would change. Ever-so-slightly, but in some extremely important ways, the Google Advanced Protection Program will modify the ways it handles Google Play Protect and the limiting of app installs from outside the Google Play Store. These changes will not affect Android, iOS, or desktop users not enrolled in the Google Advanced Protection Program. If you’re enrolled in the Google Advanced Protection Program, you’ll find a few changes coming your way in the near future. That system is a voluntary switch ON to higher security measures on a variety of devices. You’ll be able to run it on your Android device, iOS (iPhone, etc), or desktop machine, and it affects the ways in which you’re protected in several ways. One of the newest ways in which the Google Advanced Protection Program is changed starting soon is the switching ON of Google Play Protect app s

iPad Pro's new Magic Keyboard trackpad brings some macOS gestures

Image
Apple brought the iPad closer to the laptop form factor with the introduction of the Magic Keyboard with an integrated trackpad . Is the iPad even ready for cursor support? It is and this is one of the reasons why Apple split the tablet OS from the iOS found on iPhones. You can see a quick demo of the trackpad and cursor below (we've cued the video up). The cursor isn't the usual arrow you know from desktop PCs, instead it's a circle (since the iPad UI doesn't require pixel-perfect precision). In fact, when you move it over a button, it expands to highlight the whole button. Oneplace where precision is needed is text editing. Then the cursor transforms into the familiar vertical bar and you can select and  manipulate text with the same precision as on a laptop (well, once the keyboards become available in May). The iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard combo not only looks kind of like a MacBook, it will start acting like one too. Bringing the cursor to the bott

Tokyo train station tests noodle cooking robot

Image
A robot developed by Connected Robotics is being trialed as a chef at a Tokyo train station eatery until mid-April 2020. The robot can prepare 40 soba dishes per hour, which is about the same as an average cook. Workers at the eatery hope the robot will reduce the risk of being burned by hot water

GameStop reportedly canceled launch plans for two huge games

Image
Despite all that’s happening in the world, this is a big week for game releases. DOOM Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are both slated to launch on the same day: Friday, March 20th, and there’s a lot of anticipation for both titles. If you’re looking to buy either, don’t plan on attending a midnight launch event at GameStop, as it seems the retailer won’t be hosting them. So says Kotaku , which obtained an internal GameStop memo confirming as much. It isn’t just the midnight launches for Animal Crossing and DOOM Eternalthat are cancelled – it’s the launch events for all games for the foreseeable future. “Until further notice, late night launch events are suspended,” the memo says. “To maintain the health and safety of our guests and associates, it is best that we avoid situations where large numbers of guests are gathered indoors or standing in line.” Of course, it’s probably best to avoid going into a GameStop altogether if you can help it. With directives fro

vivo S6 5G Network appears in an official poster

Image
vivo will unveil its S6 5G soon. The company hasn't revealed the date of unveiling yet, but today it shared a teaser image that gives us a glimpse of the phone. The picture shows us the bottom of the S6 5G, which houses a USB-C port that's flanked by a speaker grille, microphone and a SIM card slot. There's no 3.5mm headphone jack here, meaning it's either located on the top or vivo decided to skip it. There's not much to glean from the image, but we now know the S6 5G will come in a blue-purple gradient. However, there will likely be more colorways available than the one we are looking at right now. We expect vivo to drip-feed us with more information about the S6 5G in the coming days. New iPhone 12 Pro leak suggests 3D is key for Apple’s 2020 flagships

Image
2020 is shaping up to be the year that Apple embraces Time of Flight sensors, with new evidence indicating at least some versions of the new iPhone will feature the depth-tracking camera tech. While typically found alongside regular cameras, ToF sensors generally rely on light invisible to human eyes, tracking the distance to objects in the room. They work much in the way that sonar operates, only using light rather than sound. The ToF sensor measures the difference between emitting a light and its return after bouncing off an object; that way, it can build up a so-called point cloud of depths in a scene. The technology has big potential applications for augmented reality (AR), where creating digital graphics that blend in an imperceivable way with the real world is essential to making the overall effect believable. Apple is widely expected to be including a ToF sensor in the iPad Pro , which is believed to be getting an upgrade sometime in the first half of 2020 . After th

There has never been a better time to invest in Lego

Image
TL;DR: Amazon is offering three selected Lego sets for £20, saving you up to £6.97 on list price. One of the most challenging aspects of life for many people right now is keeping the kids entertained. You can always rely on a tablet, but it's good to have options that don't involve sitting in front of a screen all day. Puzzles and craft activities are effective, but nothing comes close to Lego . Those little blocks represent guaranteed hours of fun, which is so valuable right now.  Amazon has come through with a deal for all the desperate parents out there, and is offering three selected sets of Lego for just £20. This bundle deal saves you up to £6.97 on list price, and includes sets from Disney and Star Wars. The World Richest Man jeeff Bezos’ phone was hacked

Jeef Bezos’ phone was hacked . And if the richest person in the world is vulnerable, chances are good that your startup could get hacked, too. The good news is that, as a tiny company, you’re not a big target. But as soon as you hire your first employee, it’s time to think about adopting basic security practices to ensure that you’re lessvulnerable. Nothing is perfectly secure on the internet, but you can mitigate risk.

Sony Xperia Pro expected to cost $200-300 more than the vanilla Xperia 1 II

Image
Sony announced a "Pro" version of its flagship alongside the Xperia 1 II and we knew it would be pricier from the get go. How much pricier? $200-$300 more, according to insider info. The US price of the vanilla phone isn't known yet, but in Europe it's EUR1,200 and the Canadian price seems to be CAD1,200. So, the base price for the Xperia 1 II in the US should be USD1,200 or kist under that less.

iPhone 11 and XR helped Apple make great gains in India in January and February

Image
India is one market where Apple has continuously struggled - the company having negligible market share for year now. However, it has finally started to make progress as evidenced by its sales in January and February - the months unaffected by the Coronavirus outbreak. According to a report by India's IANS news agency Apple sold 55% more iPhones in January and February of 2020, compared to the same months of 2019. Shipments were mainly driven by the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR - the cheapest current iPhones, until the iPhone 9 eventually comes. Apple's "Made in India" manufacturing campaign has also had a big impact. The company uses Foxconn's Chennai facility to manufacture phones for the local market and avoid import tariffs. It's yet to be seen how the ongoing Conornavirus outbreak will affect the market dynamics in the months to come. It has certainly disrupted supply chain, manufacturing, but it will be some time before we can truly gras

Microsoft just revealed a ton of new info about the Xbox Series X

Image
There will be no E3 this summer. And quite frankly, the future of just about every conference for the year looks to be in jeopardy, at best. Understandably, Microsoft is releasing most of the Xbox Series X info online in the meantime. A few weeks ago, it offered some key insights into the next-gen console and today it’s because with far and away its deepest dive yet.
