Nemesis has caught up with a syndicate that specialised in diverting goods at the Tin Can Port Apapa Lagos. The syndicate, including four men and a woman, was exposed after they attempted to bribe police officers attached to Festac Division, Area E Command, Lagos, with the sum of N250, 000 after they were arrested on Wednesday while allegedly attempting to divert a trailer load of bags of cashew nuts worth N13.7million meant for export. The syndicate would have succeeded in their scheme but luck ran out on them when a team of policemen led by Inspector Peter Alyasi attached to the Area E Command Festac while on stop and search patrol at the No Man’ s Land area of the town intercepted the trailer. Inspector Alyasi subsequently demanded to see the content of the goods and their vehicular documents. Instead of giving the policemen what they requested for, the syndicate led by the alleged criminal receiver of the goods offered the police N250, 000 bribe. A police s

Report On Pending Retirement Of Senior Officers False – NAF

Image
The Nigerian Air Force has denied media speculation that it has compiled a list of senior officers to be retired. The reports said the officers are to be compulsorily retired from the Force over alleged involvement in the ongoing investigation of arms purchase under the immediate past administration. The reports further said the recent retirement of 38 senior officers from the Nigerian Army was a precursor to what was to come in the other arms of the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly the Air Force. But the Spokesperson of the Air Force, Ayodele Famuyima, in a terse statement on Tuesday, denied the report. According to Mr. Famuyiwa, a Group Captain, “it is pertinent to state that this story is unfounded and did not emanate from the Nigerian Air Force. “The Press is, therefore, advised to always confirm their story with the NAF before publication”.

Refugee life at Greece's Hara Hotel

Many refugees continue night-time excursions through razor-wire fences into Macedonia, only to be beaten and returned. Refugees have gathered outside the Hara Hotel after the Idomeni camp was closed down last month [Lazar Simeonov/Al Jazeera] Evzoni, Greece - Tents dot the parking lot and field around the Hara Hotel at a weigh station in this Greek-Macedonian border town. The number of refugees and migrants at this makeshift camp increased after Greek police evicted residents of the impromptu Idomeni border crossing last month, while others voluntarily moved to government-run camps. On the other side of the highway, hundreds more are camping in the parking lot of a petrol station and in the forest behind it. Speaking to Al Jazeera, many of the Hara Hotel's outdoor residents are worried by threats that Greek police will clear the area and force them to join others in the Thessaloniki-area camps in the coming days. S.Africa parliament to consider Zuma impeachment

Image
The South African parliament will next week discuss an opposition motion to impeach President Jacob Zuma after country’s highest court ruled that he flouted the constitution, an official said Sunday. *President Zuma The speaker of parliament Baleka Mbete told journalists that the move by the Democratic Alliance (DA) would be considered on April 5. The DA is pushing for Zuma to be impeached after the Constitutional Court on Thursday ruled that he had “failed to uphold, defend and respect the constitution” in ignoring the ombudswoman’s directives to repay a portion of public funds used to upgrade his private residence. “The national assembly will on Tuesday, 5 April, consider a motion by the Democratic Alliance for the removal of the President in terms of section 89 of the constitution,” said Mbete. Boko Haram releases new video, says ‘No negotiations, No surrender’

Image
Boko Haram released a new video Friday denying any suggestions it would surrender, just over a week after their shadowy leader Abubakar Shekau appeared in a rare message looking dejected and frail. Shekau, who was not seen on camera for more than a year, released an unverified video late last month and said his time in charge of the Nigerian jihadist group may be coming to an end. If the video indeed depicts Shekau, he appears thin and listless, delivering his message without his trademark fiery rhetoric. It prompted speculation from the army that the Islamist group was on the verge of collapse in the face of a sustained military counter-insurgency. However, in Friday’s message, Boko Haram maintained it was a potent fighting force, with fighters posing with AK-47s in front of Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks and a lorry mounted with a military cannon. “You should know that there is no truce, there is no negotiations, there is no surrender,” an unidentified masked man wearing camouflage sa

Nigeria's ex-defence chief raided staff salary funds

Abuja (AFP) - Nigeria's former chief of defence staff bought property including a $5.5 million mansion with air force money, passing off his fraudulent withdrawals as staff salaries, a court heard Wednesday. Retired air chief marshal Alex Badeh is on trial at a federal high court in Abuja, accused of diverting 3.97 billion naira ($19.8 million, 18 million euros) for his own use. The 59-year-old, arrested as part of a wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign by President Muhammadu Buhari, denies 10 counts of fraud, criminal breach of trust and money laundering. The finance director under Badeh when he was chief of air staff at the time of the alleged offences in 2013 said he exchanged 558.2 million naira for dollars every month on his boss' instructions. The money was part of some four billion naira set aside for monthly salaries for air force personnel, retired air commodore Salisu Abdullahi Yushau told the court in evidence. Zimbabwean Govt. To Own All Diamonds Found In The Country, According To President Mugabe

Image
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has announced plans for his government to take control of all diamond mining operations in a bid to put an end to alleged rampant swindling linked to the multi-billion dollar gem industry in the poverty-stricken country. Mugabe’s statement came a week after authorities ordered all private mining companies to halt work and leave the country’s Marange fields, which in 2013 reportedly produced about 13 percent of the world’s diamond supply, saying that their working licenses were not renewed. “The state will now own all the diamonds in the country,” Mugabe said on Thursday in an interview with state broadcaster ZBC TV. “Companies that have been mining diamonds have robbed us of our wealth. That is why we have now said the state must have a monopoly,” Mugabe said. Zimbabwe was the eighth largest diamond producer in the world with 4.7 million carats in 2014, according to industry group Kimberly Process. The Zimbabwe Herald newspaper cited Mugabe as saying
